15. If I thought I’d Ever Change Your Mind – from ‘My Colouring Book’ by Agnetha Falkskog 2004
My Colouring Book

My Colouring Book

This beautiful woman and her lovely voice are still capable of rendering the strongest of men weak at the knees. Here she tackles an old favourite of mine (then sung by Cilla Black) and makes it her own.

I would bring you flowers in the morning
Wild roses as the sun begins to shine
Sweet perfume in tiny jeweled caskets
If I thought you’d ever change your mind

I would take you where the music’s sweetest
And feed you winter fruits and summer wine
Show you things you’ve only read in story books
If I thought you’d ever change your mind

I would bring you happiness
Wrapped up in a box and tied with a yellow bow
I would bring you summer rain and rainbow skies to make your garden grow
And in the winter snow my songs would keep you from the cold

But what use of flowers in the morning
When the garden they should grow in is not mine
And what use is sunshine if I’m crying
And my falling tears are mingled with the wine

I would bring you happiness
Wrapped up in a box and tied with a yellow bow
I would bring you rainbow skies
And summer rain to make your garden grow
And in the winter snow, my songs would keep you from the cold

I would bring you flowers in the morning
Wild roses when the sun begins to shine
Winter fruits and summer wine
Sweet perfume and columbine
If I thought you’d ever change your mind
If I thought you’d ever change your mind

16. Love Song To A Stranger – from ‘Diamonds’ by Joan Baez 1996
Diamonds

Diamonds

How long since I’ve spent a whole night in a twin bed with a stranger
His warm arms all around me?
How long since I’ve gazed into dark eyes that melted my soul down
To a place where it longs to be?
All of your history has little to do with your face
You’re mainly a mystery with violins filling in space

You stood in the nude by the mirror and picked out a rose
From the bouquet in our hotel
And lay down beside me again and I watched the rose
On the pillow where it fell
I sank and I slept in a twilight with only one care
To know that when day broke and I woke that you’d still be there

The hours for once they passed slowly, unendingly by
Like a sweet breeze on a field
Your gentleness came down upon me and I guess I thanked you
When you caused me to yield
We spoke not a sentence and took not a footstep beyond
Our two days together which seemingly soon would be gone

Don’t tell me of love everlasting and other sad dreams
I don’t want to hear
Just tell me of passionate strangers who rescue each other
From a lifetime of cares
Because if love means forever, expecting nothing returned
Then I hope I’ll be given another whole lifetime to learn

Because you gave to me oh so many things it makes me wonder
How they could belong to me
And I gave you only my dark eyes that melted your soul down
To a place where it longs to be

17. The Grey Funnel Line – from ‘Silly Sisters’ by Maddy Prior & June Tabor 1976
Silly Sisters

Silly Sisters

Don’t mind the rain or rolling sea
The weary night never worries me
But the hardest time in a sailor’s day
Is to watch the sun as it slips away.
It’s one more day on the Grey Funnel Line.

The finest ship that sails the sea
Is still a prison for the likes of me.
But give me wings like Noah’s dove,
I’d fly above her to the one I love.
It’s one more day on the Grey Funnel Line.

Oh Lord, if dreams were only real,
I’d have my hands on that wooden wheel.
And with all my might I’d turn here ’round
And tell the boys that we’re homeward bound.
It’s one more day on the Grey Funnel Line.

I’d pass the time like some machine
Until blue water turns to green.
Then I’d dance on down that walk ashore,
And sail the Grey Funnel Line no more.
And sail the Grey Funnel Line no more.

18. The Lonesome Scenes Of Winter – from ‘Cara Dillon’ by Cara Dillon 2002
Cara Dillon

As the lonesome scenes of winter in stormy winds to blow,
Clouds around the center inclined to frost and snow,
You’re the boy that I have chosen to be my only dear,
Your scornful heart is frozen and drifted far I fear.

One night I went to see my love, but he proved most scornfully,
I asked him if he’d marry me, but he would not marry me,
The night it is far spent, my love, it’s near the break of day,
And I’m waiting for your answer, my dear, what do you say?

I can but plainly tell you, I ‘ll lead a single life,
I never thought it fitting that you should be my wife,
So take a civil answer and for yourself provide,
I have another sweetheart and you I have laid aside.

Now my mind is changing that old love for the new,
This wide and lonsome valley I mean to ramble thru’,
In search of someone handsome that might my fancy fill,
That world is wide and lonesome, if he don’t another will.

19. J’Attendais – from ‘D’Eux’ by Celine Dion 1998
DEux

D'Eux

J’attendais, j’attendais
J’attendais ton regard pour expliquer enfin
Le pourquoi de ces au revoir
A tout ce long chemin

J’attendais, j’attendais

J’attendais, j’attendais
J’attendais ton regard pour expliquer enfin
Le pourquoi de ces au revoir
A tout ce long chemin

J’attendais, j’attendais, j’attendais ton amour
Ton beau ton bel amour
Je l’attendais pour enfin vivre
En donnant à mon tour
